On December 5, Tom McCoy participated in a debate with Sébastien Bubeck about the future of artificial intelligence (AI). The subject of the debate was the resolution “scaling current large language models will be sufficient to resolve major open math conjectures.” The debate was held at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing, at the University of California, Berkeley. The impetus for the debate was that Sébastien Bubeck was the first author of a paper called “Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence”, which highlighted the strengths of current systems in AI, while Tom McCoy was the first author of a paper called “Embers of Autoregression,” which responded to “Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence” by noting limitations that persist in these AI systems.
